FAQ

WHY DOES “ORGANIC” MATTER?

We believe movement towards a more sustainable and natural means of agriculture, is better for everyone in the short and long term. We’ve found that, when growing with organic methods, yields meet or exceed synthetic methods, yet the quality will be far superior. Growing organically also improves qualitative traits like smell, flavor, taste, and shelf life. Organic agriculture has higher standards when compared to conventional systems, which means no synthetic chemicals, no toxic pesticides, no GMOs and an emphasis on soil health. Our entire line of soil and nutrient products fully meets these organic standards – so look for the Root Organics label!

WHAT MAKES OUR PRODUCTS BETTER THAN THE COMPETITION?

We suggest you let the results speak for themselves. If you are currently using alternative products, run a side-by-side comparison. Please, put us to the test.

WHICH SOIL SHOULD I USE?

The answer depends on what you’re looking for. Our soils vary primarily by water holding capacity (directly influenced by the amount of coco and perlite present) and the amount of organic material present. The water holding capacity is higher in Formula 707 Potting Mix, and it’s ideal for gardener’s who want to control specific nutrient additives. The Original Potting Mix will drain and dry more quickly, and is an ideal starter soil.  LUSH contains the most organic material, which makes producing superior results even easier.

WHAT IS PERLITE?

Perlite begins its life as obsidian ore, which is a naturally occurring glass, created when water and lava collide. These little pieces of obsidian have pockets of water trapped inside. When fed into a perlite furnace, the ore is exposed to temperatures in excess of 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. This pops the ore like popcorn, into the white puffy structures you see in our mixes. Perlite is an excellent way to improve aeration and drainage, and 100% of our perlite is created in-house by Aurora innovations.

SHOULD I USE LIQUID OR DRY NUTRIENTS?

The answer depends mainly on your time and budget constrictions:

  • Liquid nutrients, come in a concentrated mix, and must be diluted properly prior to application to avoid nutrient burn.  Plants are able to consume liquid nutrients faster, therefore results will be faster, but plants will also require more feedings.
  • Dry nutrients, come in raw/powdered form, and may be sprinkled directly onto soil or mixed into a water spray.  Dry nutrients must breakdown to become effective, therefore it may take longer to see results, but the plant does not need to be fed as often.

We have seen the best results from a comprehensive use of both Liquid and Dry nutrients. The Master Feeding Schedule (available within downloads) is designed to utilize both Liquid and Dry nutrients.

WHAT IS THE “N-P-K” LABEL ON SOME PRODUCTS?

The standardized system of detailing plant nutrients, expressed as a percentage by weight, to indicate their chemical elements nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium:

  • Nitrogen (N), is used by plants for leaf growth and good color
  • Phosphorous (P), is used by plants to help form new roots, make seedsfruit and flowers, and help fight disease
  • Potassium (K), helps plants make strong stems and keep growing fast, and also help fight disease

*e.g. Buddha Grow Quart-Size, has a N-P-K of 2-0.25-2, indicating the presence of 2% nitrogen (N), 0.25% phosphorous (P) and 2% potassium (K), per quart.

We have listed N-P-K labels for all products containing nutrient additives.

SHOULD I MIX MY LIQUID NUTRIENTS? DOES THE ORDER MATTER?

For the most part it does not matter what order you add the products, or whether you combine solutions. With our Liquid Nutrients, we recommend aerating them (circulation pump and airstone) for 24 hours if possible, but it’s not mandatory.

SHOULD I FERTILIZE EVERY TIME I WATER MY PLANTS?

If you are using the Master Feeding Schedule, we recommend alternating between fertilizing and watering until the plant begins to show vigorous growth, and then switch to fertilizing every time you water.

DO I NEED TO PH MY NUTRIENTS? IF SO, WHAT PH SHOULD I MAKE MY NUTRIENTS?

Our organic soils have a buffering capacity, to which you can add nutrients without adjusting the pH. The buffering capacity of the soil will regulate the pH of the soil solution, so that necessary micro and macro nutrients will become available. If you prefer to have more control over the pH of your solution, we recommend adjusting the pH to 5.8-6.3. When in doubt… err on the side of too acidic, as it’s much easier for most plants to deal with, than too basic (pH over 7). Mixing our Roots Organics Nutrients for 24 hours will help raise the pH naturally.
